It seems that many people perfect their images by editing them in Photoshop.  We are novices in virtual tour creation, as well as Photoshop, and consequently we were wondering if anyone had any tips or advice for using Photoshop to correct images.  Are there any tools/features that are especially helpful for fixing the seam between images?  Also, it seems that to fix an image in Photoshop you need to convert it to a cube image.  Once that image is corrected, are you able to convert it back to a spherical image?  Any advice would be much appreciated!

photoshop is such a massive program, there are lots of ways to do the same things. We use photoshop to correct brightness, contrast, sharpness, colour, imperfections, tripod removal etc etc. Its VERY rare that we dont use PS to touch up an image. We find its best to save the image as a cube strip to correct imperfections but save as a equirectangular image to correct brightness and colours etc. This is because colour/ brightness correcting a cube strip can often lead to lines appearing at the cube stitch points.

RuddersUK,

I have been wondering about the cube stitch lines after correcting in PS. I never thought of the color correction being the cause. I will try it your way and hopefully I wont have anymore of those pesky little white lines

Thanks

i agree with pleasehelp... i think photoshop skill is important to produce a prefect pano. i am also a newbie and would like to learn more about how to use photoshop on modifying pano too. Anyone care to share some essential skills using for touching up pano image? example like seam, impectation, out of alignment etc...)

i use E8 fisheye to take pictures. i normally stitch with 3 fisheyes. i would say 9 out of 10 times that my stitching was not prefect. Would this stitching problem casue by my photograhy skill? i used both auto and manual stitch but still couldn't solve all the stitching problem. At his point of time, i think the photoshop skill will be important to save my image especially i cannot go back to the same place and retake the photos.

regards

fatchai

Photoshop is a very powerful program that takes years to master. A complete discussion of the techniques used to fix panos is beyond a simple answer in a post.

First, I recommend you get a good book on the subject. There are several books geared toward digital photography and the use of photoshop in post production. These books will explain the use of tools and methods of interest to the digital photographer. These methods apply directly to fixing panos.

Until then you can look up the use of the following tools in photoshop.
Clone tool
Patch tool
Healing brush

The Clone tool is what you will use the most followed by the patch tool. Look up these two tools becasue they will be what you use most often for seam patching.

Often you can "select" areas of your image and cut/paste back onto the same image. Move the copied selection over a seam area and transform it by stretching or skewing it to cover a seam. You will some times need to clone the edges of the selection to hide the seam of that but this is sometimes better than cloning a whole area. Just depends.

Look up "adjustment layers". You use these to apply color correction layers that you can change as needed to make hemis match. Specifically, you will use the "levels" command to alter the brightness/darkness of an image and you will use "color balance" to change the color tones. If you use an adjustment layer for these changes you can go back later and alter the setting without having to reload the image and do it over again each time.

Also check this link out. It has several tutorials of use. Look at the "enhancing photos" tutorial. And especially the "removing people" quicktime movie. This movie explains how to clone and use selections to remove things like seams.

To help newbies I will start a mini site with tutorials to get the best out of your panos I dont have the time to do it ALL myself so if anyone would like to submit a tutorial, keep them short and sweet and include some screen shots. The url will be www.threesixtyimages.co.uk/tipsandtricks
