Hi there

I have just bought an fc-8 lens and am looking at getting a camera to go with it (cart before horse I know!) Im looking to make panoramas and am considering a 4500, 4300 or 5000.  The 4500 seems hideously expensive on ebay compared to the other two. If I went for the 4300 would that be disasterous? Ive been using a 0-360 one shot with a fuji s7000 but I know this camera doesnt work with the Nikon lens.

Forrest,

The 4300 is a good camera but was never at any stage top of the line. The 4500 is the last of the twist cameras and is a very nice unit. The best because you can shoot RAW (NEF) files with the correct firmware is the Coolpix 5000. It takes a larger 5MP image and has a larger diameter lens (also suitable for 0-360 because it has a swivel LCD screen) It is the biggest Mega Pixel camera to accept the FC-E8.

Order of preference:

  • Coolpix 5000
  • Coolpix 4500
  • Coolpix 4300

Both the 4500 and the 5000 were classed at some stage as the Top of the Range "Flagship" models.

Regards, Smooth

The 5000 is not bad, you should also get the optional battery grip. Nef files can be also opened in Photoshop CS2.

I have still a 5000 and I only use it rarely - do you want to buy it?

Hi,

I have a 4300 and it's okay. The results are good but I'm still trying to find the right combo to get images to be as sharp as possible.

RuddersUK posted a quickie sample shot done with a 4500. I think it rivals a lot of the shots taken with better cameras. Reason? He knows what he's doing compared to folks like me who's still on the photography learning curve ramp.

Anyway, here's the link

Thanks,

This link takes you to the World Wide Panorama site for Rodrigo Alarcon-Cielock.  His Green Building [Energy] was taken with the Nikon 4500 +FC-E8 Lens.

http://geoimages.berkeley.edu/wwp905/html/RodrigoAlarconCielock.html

Below the small QTVR.. click on the 1.7mb Full Screen Version.  It is exceptionally sharp, clear and well presented.  He used a home made pan head fashioned after the Kaidan Kiwi990.

Please take note the location where the tripod was setup.  You would never get me up that high.

Dave

Hi Dave,

That's a great pano. However, that particular pano appears to be the same quality I get with my 4300. The edges are not as sharp or pronounced as they should be or I'd like them to be.

Not quite the same as some of the supersharp panos I've seen by the likes of you and other pros here. :)

Still learning....

r,
eagle

I suspect then, it is the CMOS or CCD and lens quality that adds the sharpness and high detail.  We use a Sigma 8 and a Canon 20d and 350d [both 8mpx cameras]

You might consider using Photo Shop Unsharpen tool.
