Hi again

Is there a downloadable setting for the Nikon 5000 and FC-E8? I noticed in PW that there was an ability to import. If there is a database that would be a great help.  I tried doing a search on here but nothing came up so I've probably missed something again!

Cheers once again all.

F

  • Full (M) Manual Mode
  • Camera RAW .nef image output (Firmware 1.6 needed) .jpg fine whilst learning!
  • AE-L on for each panorama sequence (Reset required each set)
  • Aperture of F8.0
  • Adjust the shutter speed to match the light meter |---|---| in the centre of your LCD display
  • Infinity ^^ Icon mountain setting
  • Custom White Balance (Set to A4 white paper in the lighted position you are shooting)
  • Shooting in Clockwise rotation
  • Use either a Remote or the Self Timer (The Nikon has two settings 3 sec and 10 sec)
  • Make 100% sure position (1) 0-360 degrees is perfectly level with the bubble in the very centre
  • Do NOT re-level the camera in position 2 or 3

That's all I can think of from memory.

Regards, Smooth

RAW allows greatest possible control after the event. You can adjust every aspect of the image including Exposure, White Balance, Tint, Colour, Sharpness and most importantly Chromatic Aberration & Vignetting (towards the edges) etc. You set the first image up as you would like it to look and then apply the exact same settings to all images in the set. By using the "Apply Previous" option from the Mouse Right Click Menu in Photoshop CS2 Camera Raw.

Shooting RAW with the Coolpix 5000 is only possible when the Firmware is upgraded to version 1.6. The upgrade is available from Nikon's website at no charge.

"Custom White Balance (Set to A4 white paper in the lighted position you are shooting) "

smooth is saying that you put a white piece of paper in front of the lens and then you "measure". Measure means the camera will adjust and now the colors will look a little different.

"Auto" white balance works nicely too. in some occassions even nicer than custom white balance imho.

Do not use "Auto" white balance. This is allowing the camera to decide the colour temperature of the photo and this will change between shots giving possible blending issues. When shooting RAW white balance is not as important as you can manually adjust the white balance (colour temperature) and make all images the same. Better though to be in the habit of setting the white balance.

It's all about learning to drive your camera correctly.

I believe the AE Lock , locks the Auto white balance for the Nikon 990 and 995. I dont' know about the other cameras. Subsequent photos will use the same Auto wb as the first photo.

Sometimes I like the color tempeture Auto achieved over the Custom/measured temperature. Is a personal preference. Sometimes custom/measured makes the photo look too white, and colors somewhat appear untrue to real life in other scenarios.

This gallery will show you a comparisions of using different white balances.

http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam/User-Guide/white-balance/990-995-wb-comparison.html

Below is a good tutorial with images showing you how to lock AE. As show in the little yellow box, WB-L  (white balance locked)

http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam/User-Guide/990/EXPOSURE/EV-AE-lock.html

Activate AE lock. The exposure parameters used for the first photo taken after activating AE lock is used for all subsequent photos. The parameters include aperture, shutter speed, sensitivity, and white balance. Flash is disabled when AE lock is in effect.

Hmm as I remember when using our Nikon 990,  if you are in a room with incandescent lighting.. set the White balance to Incandescent [Tungsten] color temperature 3200 Kalvin.   Then set the AE Lock.

Mixed light sources - incandescent - flourescent - natural daylight.  For Measuring mixed light - place an A4 piece of paper on the floor where most all of the available light is being reflected from the paper back through the lens to the sensor.  Then take one photo and the camera will measure the reflected light and use it as "Known White".  The camera will then adjust all the other colors.  Be sure to reset the white balance when moving to a new location with different lighting requirements.

Or bring along an 18% Gray Card and place it on the floor so that it reflects mixed light.  Then in Photoshop Adobe Camera Raw, use the white balance eyedropper for sampling "What color is really White" to color adjust your image set.

You can either buy an 18% Gray Card [cardboard] from your local photo store or make one like this one.
