OK, I normally shoot fine jpg from my d300. I have just tried raw/jpg, tried loading into PW5 and get this strange result. Any suggestions?

Panoweaver doesn't support D300 .nef (RAW) files. The camera was released well after the release of Panoweaver. You need to download and install Adobe DNG Converter (Freeware) and convert your .nef files to .dng (RAW) and then Panoweaver will deal with them correctly.

This has been covered many times in the past. You will most likely find other threads if you use the search function.

I ask support about this issue several weeks ago and they said they hope to include the new raw in the next upgrade.
