Hi!

Yesterday I've been at a client and she wasn't able to see the panos. She uses XP Pro and Javascript was activated.
I had to install Java Virtual Machine.

I thought PT Viewer uses Javascript and panos can be viewed only with Javascript.

Am I wrong? Most people are able to see my panos w/out having Java Virtual Machine downloaded.

Greetings,

Sven

Hmmm interesting comments.

First ptviewer.jar IS an java applet that uses its native java applet code to operate.  For this applet and its applet code to work, some form of Java Engine software is required to be installed on that machine.

Most favored Browser is Internet Explorer 6 (my statistics shows IE6 at 95%).  Netscape is running a close 4% usage.  And the 1% balance of the browsers like Opera etc come in last.

A java engine is a broser add-in program for the browser.

For IE 6 then MS Java Engine should be used.  For Netscape 7 and above usually use most current version of Sun Java Engine.  Opera and other browsers usually work with this Sun's JE.

Most web pages use some form of Java scripting code for special functions.  For the Java scripting code to work.. you need the Browser Add-in Java run time engine.

PTViewer.jar can have outside javascripting coded into the applet for additional mouse and ptviewer applet behavior controls.

What is nice about all this is that both browsers and java runtime engines are free downloads.  There is no practical reason for not running the most current versions.   Most browsers operate with out issues.  When non functioning issues come up.. it usually is caused by the Java Run Time Engine abilities not the browser.  Sun's Java Engine continuing updates are a result of resolving performance issues.  Typically,  Internet Explorers Java run time engine seems to function best with IE Browser.

OR at least, this is the way I see how the various interoperability functions are used in the web page environment.  Other forum members might be able to further clarify this comment.

Hope this helps,

Dave

Some computers with XP dont have virtual machine on them. This sucks when you go to show off to the client and the tour is not playing.

Java Applets and Javascript are two different things.

You require Java Run Time engine plug in to view a Java Applet. 97% of all computers have it already installed and activated. Some versions of Microsoft XP do not have this install or even offered anymore. So point them at the FREE downloads either at Sun or some where where you can download Microsoft's Java Engine

If you are ever worried about your customer not having Java installed make sure you explain to them it is FREE to download and install. Or if you are visiting with the client take a CD with the current version of Java so you can install it for them. Really it is not that hard!

Regards, Smooth

You can get Internet Explorer Java Runtime Engine by pointing your browser to http://www.dhimaging.com.au/

Then click the menu item "Downloads"  then look and click in the upper right corner of the table for... or just click on this MS Java Virtual Machine .  It will download the file to your C:\\ hard drive favorite folder.  Its 1 large file that can be put on and installed from your CD-r.

Smooth is correct. There is no such thing as "Java scripting". Java is not a scripted language. Javascript scripting is okay.

It's a shame they're named so similarly, as they're often confused.

PT Viewer has absolutely nothing to do with Javascript.

Well it does in a certain way.

You can add the mayscript string to the applet.. and then ptviewer will inter react with your javascripting for drop down menus and other external scripting.

When mayscript is added, then the action is momentarly passed to javascript... and when it is finished the action is returned to the applet commands.

Only a thought on the topic
