Hmmm interesting comments.
First ptviewer.jar IS an java applet that uses its native java applet code to operate. For this applet and its applet code to work, some form of Java Engine software is required to be installed on that machine.
Most favored Browser is Internet Explorer 6 (my statistics shows IE6 at 95%). Netscape is running a close 4% usage. And the 1% balance of the browsers like Opera etc come in last.
A java engine is a broser add-in program for the browser.
For IE 6 then MS Java Engine should be used. For Netscape 7 and above usually use most current version of Sun Java Engine. Opera and other browsers usually work with this Sun's JE.
Most web pages use some form of Java scripting code for special functions. For the Java scripting code to work.. you need the Browser Add-in Java run time engine.
PTViewer.jar can have outside javascripting coded into the applet for additional mouse and ptviewer applet behavior controls.
What is nice about all this is that both browsers and java runtime engines are free downloads. There is no practical reason for not running the most current versions. Most browsers operate with out issues. When non functioning issues come up.. it usually is caused by the Java Run Time Engine abilities not the browser. Sun's Java Engine continuing updates are a result of resolving performance issues. Typically, Internet Explorers Java run time engine seems to function best with IE Browser.
OR at least, this is the way I see how the various interoperability functions are used in the web page environment. Other forum members might be able to further clarify this comment.
Hope this helps,
