.tif, .bmp, or .png (non lossy file formats) really shouldn't be compared with RAW image files which .dng is. Chalk & Cheese! The former are final format images where as the latter is a working file to be manipulated in such a way so that you can produce a final format image from from it.

I suspect you are using Adobe Camera Raw to convert from NEF to .DNG.  ACR 4.4.1 has a very large set of image adjustments.

When opening a set of .dngs in Panoweaver 5, it takes you 1 more time into PW's  Raw Conversion.  PW only lets you adjust for exposure, white balance and image depth... which are most used basic tool set.  It needs to have chromatic abberation and vignetting too.
